Resource Blog #2

As teachers, we will all have to assess and track each one of our students' progress throughout the school year. I have found a website that helps with this process and even lets the student have some say and interaction in their own assessment. The website I found is called IXL and is an interactive learning tool for students, teachers, and parents. IXL has skills and standards lined up for grades K-12 and is also a cross-curricular resource, including math, science, language arts, and social studies. This website allows each one of your students to create an account that you, as the teacher, can access. Their account will track their current skill level through their participation in small, fun, interactive assessments that are controlled by the student. As they take the assessment the program evolves based upon which questions they get right or wrong and focuses on what level of understanding they are on. Before taking the assessment, there is a page where the student can choose the grade level and the skill they need to practice more on. It will give them questions to answer, as well as examples to explain each question. This process helps build their skill level and understanding before taking tests, while concurrently giving you a better idea of what they have absorbed in class. This tool strays away from textbook reading and practices and puts a more modern spin on getting your students ready for statewide assessments. Now, why do I recommend this tool? In a room full of 25 plus kids and having four or more class periods, keeping up with each students progress can get tedious. This website could be a huge help in keeping track of the entire class and reveal those that may need special attention during instruction.'

  1. I totally agree with your take on this outlook of how to keep track of your students. When I became a substitute teacher, I wanted to help every student the best way I could. When I found out it was harder to keep up with every student and that I couldn’t get to every student I had to make a change. So, one of the teachers told me about your website which was a great help in helping me keep track of every class. This website helps me see what student needed more help with their work.

  2. Shelby! I think this is a great resource for not only teachers but students as well! This resource focuses on each student individually and helps meet them where they are at and succeed in areas that need more attention than a teacher in a classroom of 25 kids would have time for. I think this resource is a great tool for teachers wanting a more growth-mindset that allows their students to truly learn without all the pressure that comes in the classroom. It also is something that they can relate to as Gen Z and being so advanced with technology. If the student enjoys it more than they are more likely to learn and absorb the information than reading from an old-fashioned textbook. Great resource!!
