Synthesis Blog Post #4

Journal Club Reading and Presentation Guide

  • Summary
    • This article suggests that English teachers should use literature from authors like Carl Sagan, Mary Shelley, and Arthur Clarke for examples of how many writers, over the years, have broken the wall between literature and science. It suggests pieces of literature that could be used for in-class assignments to supplement cross-curricular readings as well as mentioning ways to bring either science into the English class of English into the science class. The article is trying to point out the interrelationship between the two and show that it is okay to cross these two contents, because to some this seems unnatural.
  • Connections
    • This LLED class has emphasized the importance of using literature in other content areas, just as this particular article is pointing out as well.
    • The article mentions how Steven Hawking breaks the wall between scientific and artistic, I was able to connect documentaries and movies that I have seen about his theory of everything so what the article was saying about him.
    • I have read Back To The Future; as the article mentions before it was just a book with humor and cool ideas and I now can see the connection between the study of Einstein's idea of time and that piece of literature.
  • Critiques
    • I enjoyed how the author connects words like metaphor, dances, emotion; to ways to explain science.
    • I think the only thing teachers should be careful of is teaching science in a literature classroom or vice versa.
  • Importance
    • The article points out that not only is using literature in science important but using science in literature is also important (they are directly proportional).
    • Something important the article points out is that when you cross literature into science, one may find scientific literature to be "bogus" and it is important to be able to recognize the clues given in the text to prove the information to be true facts.
    • It is important to note that if you're teaching a literature class and are on scientific texts, bringing an expert in that scientific field into the literature class to discuss ideas from the book, would be a great supplement for regular class discussion.

  1. Great job! I synthesized this article as well. I had more critiques but I see that you mentioned a positive aspect of the article in this section- "I enjoyed how the author connects words like metaphor, dances, emotion; to ways to explain science." I didn't think of this in my synthesis. It's always good to give a direct example of how the subjects of Literature and Science can transition together. In my own critiques, I discussed how the article does little to provide instruction or direct advice at how to actually these strategies effectively in a classroom. Therefore, I'm glad you were able to bring the example in your blog. (110 words)

  2. Nice post! Although I am neither science nor literature as my area of emphasis, I thought it would be good to read and articulate about the different emphasis I will not be working with, as to try and relate them to my area of emphasis, math and social studies. The first thing I noticed was how you set up your blog, which I thought was interesting since I never thought of doing a sort of bullet point blog for mine. The idea of identifying the critiques and connections to your two area of emphasis also stuck out to me, and now that I read that you synthesized the article to identify these concepts was positive as well. word count: 117
